Secondary School Sports

Our MYP/PYP Physical and Health Education programme aims to empower students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active and develop the motivation for making healthy life choices. To this end, we foster the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to a student’s balanced and healthy lifestyle. Through opportunities for active learning, PHE embodies and promotes the holistic nature of well-being. Students engaged in PHE will explore a variety of concepts that help foster an awareness of physical development and health perspectives, empowering them to make informed decisions and promoting positive social interaction.

PHE focuses on both learning about and learning through physical activity. Both dimensions help students to develop approaches to learning (ATL) skills across the curriculum. PHE contributes to a unique perspective to the development of the attributes of the IB learner profile, promoting the health of individuals and communities.

Students can learn to appreciate and respect the ideas of others, and develop effective collaboration and communication skills. This subject area also offers many opportunities to build positive interpersonal relationships that can help students to develop a sense of social responsibility. We aim to develop the enjoyment, engagement and confidence in physical activity that students need in order to achieve and maintain a balanced, healthy life.

Physical activity and health are of central importance to human identity and global communities. They create meaningful connections among people, nations, cultures and the natural world, and they offer a range of opportunities to build intercultural understanding and greater appreciation for our common humanity.

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.

Expected Behavior of Pupils

It is expected that all pupils adhere to the school rules as stated in the Whole School Staff Handbook. Particular points of reference regarding Physical Education are:

  1. All pupils to arrive at lessons on time;
  2. The appropriate uniform is worn for the activity;
  3. All jewelry is removed and hair tied back;
  4. To work co-operatively with others in group activities, this includes aiding the skill development of themselves and others;
  5. To be respectful to staff, other pupils and the facilities/equipment;

Failure to bring PE Uniform

Pupils not attending in the correct uniform to a lesson will be subject to detention after two no kits. A letter will be sent home for persistent offenders.

Non-participation

To be excused from a lesson pupils must have a written excuse note from home or if long term, from the doctor. However pupils attending school should expect to take part in PE, generally speaking, if they are healthy enough to be in school then they are considered well enough to participate. Pupils with illness/injury of a minor nature should still bring their uniform, as they may be judged to participate in a limited way in activities, which will not aggravate their problem. In addition to this the Health and Safety Act states that pupils must wear appropriate clothing. Non- participation with a legitimate excuse should be provided with an option, which makes good use of their time and is relevant to PE.
